Learning about Investment Opportunities

The modern energy sector is surprisingly large and growing every day. It includes thousands of small start-up companies and a few hundred publicly traded companies. Everyone, including my company, is trying to find the next big company —the one possessing a transformative idea and cutting-edge technology to save the planet. Based on the continued advances both on and off the grid, I am confident that one or more break-out companies will emerge in the near future.

My staff and I have been evaluating and honing in on these break-out prospects since 2006. Our job is to identify the most promising companies, categorize them by sector, analyze them, and select those most likely to deliver on their modern energy dreams.

The longer we do this work, the more we understand the need to augment our findings with expert analysis and research. By continually evaluating our growing body of data, we can uncover the investment gems, some of which are hidden in plain sight.

If you’re new to the modern energy world, you may be wondering how to begin educating yourself about the various energy sectors. From experience, I can tell you it takes considerable time to become conversant in even a single sector; no one person can know everything about such a diverse array of sectors—solar, wind, biofuels, geothermal, nuclear, wave, hydro, smart grid, and so on. Each of these categories is a field unto itself.

In this chapter, I’ll offer suggestions on how to conduct modern energy research and provide a number of excellent resources you may want to review.

First, I will give you some perspective for those hoping to translate research into potential investment opportunities.
